Why did Vidya Balan lose out to Mallika Sherawat?

Recently, Mallika Sherawat and Why this kolaveri di singer-actor Dhanush were voted the ‘Hottest Vegetarian Celebrities 2011' in a poll conducted by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). While we weren’t surprised with the Youtube sensation Dhanush walking away with the tag, we were really rooting for Vidya Balan all through, especially after she set temperatures soaring with her dare-bare ‘dirty’ act in director Milan Luthria’s The Dirty Picture. Representatives of PETA insist that the verdict is solely based on votes collected and that helped us realise why Balan didn’t make the cut. One very important factor that didn’t work in Vidya’s favour was that she isn’t net savvy like Mallika, who is very active on Twitter and makes it a point to reach out to as many fans as possible. Vidya chooses to stay aloof and talks to the media only when her film is about to release. Another reason why Mallika won was that she has managed to crossover to Hollywood – though perhaps not super-successfully – and that gives her extra brownie points ‘coz of the larger fan base of people who know who she is. We are sure Vids isn’t sulking over this loss, because the awards season has begun and she is the hot favourite in both popular and critics’ categories and that itself is a mean feat.
